Another Update in the Wall

Here we are, mid September already and time for another update!

We're excited to see the Northern Space Link Teleport and Data Centre get into construction; thanks to our partners at MP Lundy Construction, work is starting on site and we'll soon see an amazing new building in Kanata! Watch this space for regular updates, we promise!

The 360 Lofts is well underway and occupancies are later this fall. Look for a new and exciting face in the Byward Market!

St. George's Roman Catholic Church is in full fund-raising mode. Vist the church's website for more info. We're planning to do stone restoration work this fall and then tackle the addition in the spring.

Blog updating!

Okay.... I know, it's been months since my last update but it's been a busy time.....resolution for 2011 is to do this more often! So, as a catch up, here are the exciting things that are happening!

The Metropia Condominium project is closer to reality than ever...reports from the developer are that construction will be in full swing this spring; this exciting development features high end luxury condos in a exciting and up-and-coming Ottawa neighbourhood. Work continues at Z6 Urban Lofts where construction is in full swing for spring occupancies! The building took form over the past several months and it is fantastic see see the final shape of the building coming together in this great neighbourhood! www.z6urbanlofts.com for more info.

At the same time, 360 Lofts Condo continues in the Byward Market. We're excited to see this project finally take shape! www.360lofts.ca for more info. DA was also pleased to be invited to present this project as an innovative use of wood construction at the Canada Wood Council fall WoodWorks Conference in Toronto in the fall of 2010. We were hoping to present this project along, with the structural and acoustical engineers at the spring 2011 OAA conference but, alas, this didn't pan out.

DA is excited to be a part of some new and exciting projects:

The Orleans Veterinary Hospital located at the corner of Innes and Tenth Line Roads in Ottawa's east end will be expanding to a new facility located on the same property; right now, we're developing concepts, but watch for more news soon!

We are working with the developer for a project in Navan to finally get into construction this summer for the Navan Mixed Use project; this development will feature 4 residential apartments and 2 commerical tenants in a modestly scaled and high quality building, located in the Village of Navan. Watch for the construction to start soon!

DA is also excited to be working with members of the community to develop sites in Little Italy (Preston Street), the Byward Market, and in Kanata for some exciting new possibilities. These are all secret for now but watch for more news later!

LEED AP

Last Friday, DA staff wrote the CaGBC exams and now 50% of the staff are LEED Accredited Professionals! This is exciting and brings a further dimension to the work at DA as we are now able to provide further service to those of our clients who are seeking an environmentally responsible solution to their building projects. www.cagbc.org for more information on the system and process. DA recently had occasion to slip out of Ottawa and spend a weekend in Kansas City, MO. While there, we spent a day at the Nelson-Atkins Museum and were stunned by the incredible craft of the addition, completed in 2007, by Steven Holl Architects. The entire addition, likened to an 11 storey building on its side, glows at night, thanks to the exterior walls being constructed of cast glass... the building is stunningly crafted, exquisite in it's construction and conception and, truly, a wonder to behold. http://www.nelson-atkins.org/ for more information. Green Building Council

DA is excited to announce that we have joined the Canada Green Building Council as a corporate member! We are happy to support this organization and, as part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, the entire DA office will be attending the workshop seminar for LEED NC in October 2009 in Ottawa and writing the LEED AP examinations before December 31, 2009

As mentioned earlier, Dreessen Architect submitted a proposal for an exciting new school project for the Renfrew District School Board. We recently learned that we placed a very close position and missed the short list by one position. We want to congratulate the winning team and wish every success to the School Board.

Dreessen Architect is excited about two new projects! We are part of the team developing the former school building in downtown Renfrew to convert it to exciting new condominiums! Watch for new and exciting news to follow. We are also 'tilting at windmills' by going after a large and exciting project to build a new environmentally responsible school for the Renfrew County District School Board; through an exciting and intensive RFP process, we hope to make in with the bigger firms and believe we've put in a competetive and exciting proposal. With a lot of active comments and interest, a second posting was made today talking about the benefits of using wood construction for this exciting project. Longfields Community Church

Dreessen Architect Inc is pleased to announce that we were successful in being shortlisted for this exciting project to develop a new church for the Longfields community in Barrhaven, a growing community in Ottawa. After presenting our architectural concepts and demonstating our committment to a detailed programming and design study, Dreessen Architect Inc developed concepts for a variety of possible schemes for the church. In the end, the LCC opted to work with another firm but Dreessen Architect came a very close second place to winning this exciting project; this puts Dreessen Architect ahead of many other firms, despite being a relative new comer to the Ottawa architectural community. We would like to thank the community for the oppertunity and wish to congratulate the LCC on using the Ontario Association of Architect's Quality Based Selection process. Dreessen Architect wishes the very best to the LCC and looks forward to many more opertunities to meet with other community groups.

Council Election Results

Toon was unsuccessful in his bid to obtain a council seat with the OAA but wishes to express thanks to all who supported his campaign and wishes the best of luck to the successful candidates. Toon hopes that the reelected members of council continue their mandate to represent all the architects in the province of Ontario on OAA council. Toon will be back with the OAA on the Practice Committee for another 3 year term and hopes to continue meaningfully to this important committee.

Toon Dreessen officialy entered "political life" by confirming nomination for a vacant council seat as a provincial representative on the Ontario Association of Architects council for 2009-2012.

From Toon's profile for election: "I believe that if we don’t take an active role in how we grow, we will find our profession run for us, not by us. I believe that the demographic shift in the profession needs to be addressed and anticipated; emerging trends in the way our professional services are procured within federal, provincial and municipal governments (as well as quasi-governments) are an overhead burden that are detrimental to our profession; changing electronic environments and their impact on our profession as well as the legal framework in which we function need our attention. One of my goals is to help move our members towards financial security by moving away from undercutting each other and move towards adoption of work breakdown structures and service to service (or ability to ability) fee comparisons. As a recently licensed architect (2005), I have built my practice from the ground up into a successful, thriving practice, something I believe we can all do."
